NOTICE FOR VUELING USERS ON ANDROID

  • Why is the app not working?

    • Short version: Vueling is restricting access to apps.
    • Long version: In order to connect to your company account, a windoww with a browser screen called WebView is open so that login is performed and the app continues after that. Vueling's eCrew setup is not accepting connections from Android's WebView. Android decided some time ago that connections from these WebViews would send out a header (X-REQUESTED-WITH) that identifies the connection as not coming from a normal browser. They have since decided that they will deprecate that header but it hasn't happened yet since it was announced 2 years ago. They recognize it's not necessary and actually affects privacy as it sends out details without the user knowing but still they haven't rolled it out.
  • What is the solution?

Until Google decides to disable that setting for everyone by default, it is possible to disable that header manually from the hidden WebView settings. To do that you can follow the steps shown on the app login page:
    1. Press the button to open the Android WebView settings
    2. Click on "Flags" on the bottom menu
    3. Search for a flag named "WebViewXRequestedWithHeaderControl" and set it as Enabled
    4. Kill the BeCrew app and reopen
    5. Optionally, disable the bar flag notification
  • What are the implications of changing that flag?

Connections from any WebView, not only within BeCrew will not expose the name of the host app when connecting to a server. You can read more about the X-REQUESTED-WITH header and why you probably want it disabled any way here: https://www.stoutner.com/webview-devtools/ By default you will see a persistent notification with a flag icon to warn you but you can disable it with a long press.
